What are the fundamentals of Overlanding, overlanding is getting out of the rat race and exploring the great outdoors. This is normally done with a vehicle or thus it would be called backpacking or camping by horseback! 😄
I was overlanding long before it was called that! We would throw everything in the back of my four-wheel drive truck and head to the mountains, rivers, or plains. We would set up a basic campsite with tents and a campfire and just enjoy being out under the stars at night. Hiking and fishing were often part of our activities.
Today there are so many options to Overland – 4WD truck campers, 4WD or high-clearance RVs, Tent-trailers or rooftop tents, or just a car and a tent! There is lots of gear available to complement your overlanding adventures – tents, stoves, water filtration kits, gas fire pits, cooking utensils, and even power packs or generators for your electronic devices.
The Fundamentals of Overlanding
Overlanding cam be going to the local camping grounds, visiting National Parks around the country, or driving into remote areas using fire roads and four-wheel drive roads open to the public. There is literally hundreds of thousands of acres available in the National Parks, National Forests, and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land.
Our recent overlanding adventures started with taking my Jeep Wrangler and exploring Southern California campsites; including primitive areas with only vault toilets and fire rings available to no facilities at all. I had my two-man tent packed and some basic camp gear – water, food, maps, compass, a knife, a Coleman one-burner stove, some cooking utensils, and not much else.
So, my recommendation is to go out and try your hand at overlanding; even if it is just to your local campground with the family car!
